How to Build a GEO Sitemap for Local SEO Power
Local search engine optimisation (SEO) is constantly evolving, as many local businesses realised after the rolling out of Google's Pigeon update back in 2014. While there are some things you can control when it comes to SEO, there are numerous things you have no control over.
The one thing you do have control over is your GEO sitemap, submitting it to Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools. Let's take a closer look.
Search engines rely on microdata to get structured information, such as your business and location. Two formats that search engines appreciate RDFa, which is used by schema. The good news, is that as a business owner, we don't expect you to understand every detail of microdata, but having it in key areas can help search engines gather information about your business, which in turn can help you improve your local SEO ranking.
We have found that GEO Sitemap Generator is a handy tool. You can simply visit the website to start the process. You will need to fill in your business location information, which is used to generate a KML file.
It's important to hit the Add Location button, where you are prompted to enter your URL, and the file name for your KML file. You are also provided an opportunity to add a description and file author. Ensure you complete everything before Generating the file.
You will be prompted on whether to Download Now or Get an Email Once the File is Ready. An email is a great idea if you have added multiple locations.
Download your KML file and GEO sitemap, uploading them to the root of your website. Ensure you note what URLs are pointing to these files.
The next step of the process is to log into your Webmaster Tools account and submit your GEO sitemap to Google or Bing.
For Google you will find the Sitemap link under Crawl > Sitemaps
For Bing you will find the Sitemap link under Configure My Site > Sitemaps
The final step is to add microdata to the HTML of your website. For this you can select Schema, copy and pasting that into your website.
Creating a GEO sitemap can help improve your local SEO efforts. Of course, this is only one step in the process.
