Google vs OpenAI: Who Controls the Future of Search?
ChatGPT has gained momentum with its conversational interface, along with its sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. At the same time, even with these strengths, Open AI may have challenges in adapting to search users using its platform. Let's take a closer look.
An evaluation was carried out to compare Google to OpenAIs ChatGPT, focusing on the search market. Using SEMRush's tool, direct traffic was analysed over a six month period. Direct traffic was the primary metric.
The market share breakdown:
You may think that OpenAIs market share is low, but in the past year, ChatGPT has experienced rapid growth with a more than 184,000% growth in direct traffic. This signals user interest and adoption using the platform, while Google showed a modest growth during the same period.
It is also important to bear in mind that not all ChatGPT use overlaps with Google search. Many users request ChatGPT to analyse trends, not using it for traditional search. As user become more comfortable with the capabilities of the platform, it could encourage other uses, such as search. There is no concrete data as of yet to confirm this.
AI has transformed search as we know it, encouraging a conversational approach. Most search queries still remain relatively simple, not constructed in full sentences. This could be how search engines, such as Google, have conditioned search users to communicate.
For example, you may search for “Best SEO Agency London,” on Google, as this is how we are conditioned to carry out searches. If you were talking to your friend, you would say “I am searching for the best SEO Agency in London as I want to work with a local company.” Conversational AI has transformed search, enabling us to search using a conversational tone you would use with your friends or family.
Google's algorithms have trained us to use concise and fragmented queries, such as “Best SEO Agency London,” to convey intent without using a full sentence. This has made Google the most valuable tool for quick searches.
ChatGPT is a conversational platform, prioritising engagement, but users don't want engagement when carrying out a search. ChatGPT first caught our attention, encouraging adoption. This of course, made us all believe Google's dominance in the market may be in trouble.
Interestingly, Google's traffic has increased, showing that Open AI may not be in a position to replace Google as easily as we first anticipated.
While AI is being introduced in all aspects of search, including Google. The majority of users are still defaulting to Google for simplicity, even with conversational tools becoming more sophisticated and readily available. With decades of shaping user expectations and providing accurate results, Google remains a top choice.
There is a long list of search engines, even with unique features, have not been able to rival Google:
Bing – remains a distant second in the search engine landscape
Yahoo – outsourced its technology to Microsoft Bing
DuckDuckGo – privacy-focused alternative, only holding onto 1% of the market share
Ask Jeeves – launched with conversational approach, couldn't match the scalability of Google
Baidu – Dominates in China, but little influence anywhere else
Let's not be fooled, we know of many users that prefer Open AI ChatGPT for search. It is also important to remember that AI is still in its infant stages, it's only been around a short while, which means it still has a lot of learning and growing to do. As a result, when using Open AI for search, any results need to be double checked on Google. For now, Google continues to control the future of search. What happens further down the line, we can only guess, but right now the statistics speak for themselves. Are you ready to target Google and Open AI users? Contact Genie Crawl to find out more.
