How to Optimise Your Website for Googlebot’s Crawl Budget

Crawl budget is an important search engine optimisation (SEO) element that websites need to focus on. Crawl budget is essential when it come to larger websites that may have millions of web pages, or websites with pages that change on a daily basis.

SEO comprises of so many elements and processes, that it is easy to let your crawl budget fall under the radar. Your crawl budget should be optimised, helping to improve online visibility and ranking in search engine results pages (SERPs).

What is a Crawl Budget?

Crawl budget is the number of web pages the search engine crawlers visit within a set time frame. There are considerations that go into your crawl budget, including the crawlers attempt to not overload your service, combined with its desire to crawl your website.

Crawl budget optimisation is a number of steps needed to boost efficiency and the rate Googlebots visit your page.

As you know, crawling is the first step to appearing in SERPs. If your website isn't crawled, along with new pages or updates, they cannot be added to the search engine index, therefore they cannot be ranked for relevant search queries.

Of course, you want the crawlers to visit your website often, ensuring any new pages and updates are added to the index quickly. Google's index is filled with billions of web pages and more are being added daily

How to Optimise Your Website Crawl Budget

There are a number of steps you can take to ensure you maximise your crawl budget. These include:

Disallow URLs in Robots.txt File

While Google has confirmed that disallowing a URL does not affect your crawl budget, it is still a useful step. Google will crawl your site at the same crawl rate, but when you disallow URLs that are not important, you tell Google to crawl useful parts of your site at a higher rate.

Important note: Do not use noindex meta tags to block Googlebot, as it then has to perform a request to see the meta tag, wasting your crawl budget.

Look For Redirect Chains

Redirect chains occur when numerous URLs redirect to other URLs, that are also redirected. When this goes on for too long, Googlebot may abandon the chain, before it reaches the final destination. Chains take the form of infinite loops when your URLs are redirected to one another.

Use Server Side Rendering

Googlebots use the latest version of Chrome to see contented loaded by JavaScript. This means the Googlebot crawls your page and resources, such as JavaScript, then spends resources to render them. We recommend sticking to HTML to reduce harming your crawl budget.

We have covered the importance of page speed in terms of user experience, but it is just as important to your crawl budget. Google advised that their crawling is limited to bandwidth, time and availability of Googlebot. When your server responds quickly, Googlebot is able to crawl more pages, which is why we also recommend server side rendering, along with focusing on your Core Web Vitals.

Improve Internal Linking

Google will crawl any URLs on a page. It's also important to bear in mind that different URLs are seen as separate pages. Go through your internal links, ensuring that they link to important pages and there are no broken links to improve crawl budget efficiency.

Update Your XML Sitemap

Ensure you keep your XML sitemap updated. Googlebot will have an easier time understanding where the internal links lead with a XML sitemap. Only include your canonical URLs in the sitemap, ensuring it corresponds to your updated robots.txt file.

Conclusion

Crawl budget optimisation is essential if you want your web pages to be visible in search results. Your crawl budget should be kept in mind when it comes to your SEO strategy. Feel free to get in touch with Genie Crawl today if you are struggling to optimise for Googlebot's crawl budget.
